Changing as a Father

“Before I was a Father, I was responsible for myself, now that I’m a Father I am responsible for a family.”

Being a Dad changes you in unexpected ways. After years of only having to please yourself, suddenly the focus is on someone else – an innocent young kid who's completely dependent on you. It can be a bit of a shock at first, and it's easy to feel a bit resentful on occasion, but as you learn to give unconditionally to your child, the rewards come back to you. Some of them are instant, like the first time your child manages a weak smile. Others come months later - you'll never forget their first few faltering steps. Or for that matter, the first time they wee on your brand new jacket.

Wake-up call

Rather than thinking just for yourself, you’ll learn to think through how the decisions you make will impact the lives of your family. For many of us it’s a great wake-up call to how we’re leading our lives and that there are more important things than work or hanging out with mates.

The more available you are to your child, the more you’re going to contribute to their development and you might even find the rewards are far better than the things you've left behind.
