Encouraging ambitions

We're raising an entire generation of genius footballers, brilliant musicians and wonderful singers.  At least we'd like to think we are. Talk to almost any Dad, and you'll hear that his son's the next Ronaldo, his daughter's the next Kylie and his dog's the new Lassie. But while our kids might not quite reach those heights, it doesn't hurt to give them a bit of encouragement.

- Robin Gibb

“When he saw that we were interested in music, he encouraged it and allowed it to blossom.”

Your child’s talents

As adults, we're amazed by things we see in kids that they just take for granted - such as a natural ability with a football or the piano; especially if we don't have those talents ourselves.

If your child does have a particular talent or talents, it’s important to encourage them to the level that they’re interested. Over-encouraging a child can be just as bad as under-encouraging them though - just because they've put crayon on the walls, it doesn't necessarily mean they want you to buy them arts materials every birthday for the next ten years. Talk to your child’s teacher about their abilities, and their ambitions - be prepared for some surprises and disappointments.

Support your child

As a parent, accept that your child may not share your ambitions. You might have wanted to be a Premier League footballer, and you might see some natural ability in your son but if he has no interest at all, and would rather be an accountant, then you just have to be happy for him. On the bright side, at least you’ll never have to do another tax return.

Above all, be proud of your child’s achievements as they try to find their own unique place in the world. There are many routes to success and with your support your child will find the right one for themselves.

Dads-Space will be running a series of articles, features and tips on encouraging your children’s ambitions. We’d love to hear from you about your experiences. Why not drop us a line at editor@dads-space.com.
