Lewis Hamilton was celebrating last night after becoming the Formula 1 world champion in the dying moments of the final lap in the final race of the season. In a nail-biting finish to the Brazilian Grand Prix, the young McLaren driver, 23, wrested the title away from his rival, Felipe Massa in the dying seconds of the race.
Hamilton, who needed to place 5th or better in the race to beat Massa, had struggled after being overtaken by Sebastien Vettel going into the final lap. Filipe won the race, and his Ferrari team began celebrating. But the champagne quickly turned to sour milk as Hamilton raced past a stuttering Timo Glock with seconds to go, nabbing fifth place in the process.
After the race, Hamilton celebrated becoming the youngest ever Formula 1 champion in style hugging Nicole Sherzinger, his Pussycat Dolls girlfriend, and embracing his Dad, Anthony, who was every inch the proud father. Anthony, who worked for British Rail and had worked long hours in multiple jobs to keep his son’s dream alive, said: ‘I can’t say (what I’m feeling), I can’t find any words – it’s absolutely great’. Later though, Anthony said that he hoped that Lewis’ success would inspire other families: ‘This is the culmination of 16 years hard work, and we have to hope this is an inspiration for other families and kids… the reality is, it can be done’.
