How to manage school holidays

School, Holidays, Bored, Kids, Dads Fathers, Parents, Days, out, trips, activities

Most working adults get 4 to 5 weeks of holiday a year, whereas children get around 12. Holidays are expensive, too and even just keeping your child busy during the day can cost a small fortune.

If there are two of you looking after the children, it can be easier. But if there’s just the one of you, you’ll need to look for help. Can your parents or brothers and sisters help with childcare? Can you take turns to look after the children with friends?

There may also be clubs and activity groups in your area. Your child’s school or your local library should have information on:

• kids clubs, playgroups, etc…
• athletics or football clubs which run daily summer activities.

Three words that send a chill down my spine: ‘Dad, I’m bored’.

Free or cheap activity ideas for school holidays

It’s easy to spend money on keeping the kids active during the holidays. Here are some low-cost ideas:

• long walks in the country
• trips to the park
• museums and art galleries – all public ones are now free to enter
• treasure hunt (organise with other parents)
• gardening – if you have an allotment or garden
• arts and crafts
• reading library books
• check dads-space for what’s new for the up and coming holidays.

Remember that there are millions of parents in your situation, and so there are activities laid on. Try to share the burden of childcare as much as you can.
