Is my child developing normally?

It’s the big question that every parent asks themselves, from before birth until… well, you’re always going to wonder, frankly. Worrying about your children is not only natural; it’s part of the job description for being a parent.

Okay, so the doctors have done their checks and your baby has the right number of eyes, arms and legs. You have a healthy child. But there’s still a nagging doubt about whether things are going to happen at the right time: smiling, walking, talking, eating solids, toilet training… the list is endless.

In books, leaflets and here on www.dads-space.com you’ll find information and advice about what your children should be doing and by when - the stages a child goes through when they develop. These help you to check that your child is developing normally.

However, no two children are the same – think of your own family, and how different they all are. It’s noticeable right from birth.

Children develop in their own time. It’s natural to compare your child with others of a similar age. Your child might be late (according to the charts) in walking or talking, but they’re probably ahead in something else. Be positive about the changes you see in your child and encourage them with praise.

Remember

  • Your child is a unique individual.
  • Be patient – growing takes its time.
  • Be encouraging and supportive to the efforts your child is making.
  • Don’t be worried about what other people’s children are, or aren’t, doing.

It’s actually pretty remarkable when you look at what a child has to learn in the first couple of years of its life. You have little memory of it yourself, but you did it. Billions have done so, and your child will too!
