Keeping your child safe online

The internet offers numerous benefits in terms of eduction, information, communication and entertainament, but there's also a dark side that parents need to be aware of. The National Socieity for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) has issued a list of tips for parents to give to their kids to keep them safe online:

Top tips

1. Never use your real name

2. Never share personal information - keep your passwords private

3. Instead of posting a photo of you, use a picture you like instead

4. Don't post any photos or videos that you wouldn't be happy for your teacher or parents to see

5. Don't add anyone you don't know to your friends list - if you don't know them, don't add them

6. If someone sends you nasty messages, don't reply to them - show the message to a trusted adult as soon as possible

7. Don't arrange to meet someone that you have met online without checking with your parents or carer first

8. Avoid sites that are meant for adults

If you as a parent have any concerns about the safety of your child's online activity you should inform the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) immediately at www.ceop.gov.uk.

For more information and advice about keeping your cild cafe online you can call the NSPCC's Helpline on 0800 800 5000.

Internet safety campaign

The NSPCC has launched a UK-wide internet safety campaign. The charity is calling for adult sites to be blocked to children who use the internet via their mobiles and ensuring social networking sites are doing all they can to protect young users.

To back the campaign you should go to www.nspcc.org.uk/safetynetcampaign and sign the petition to Gordon Brown calling for the internet to be a safer place for children.
