You may have many concerns about becoming a dad. Being a parent is one of the most rewarding yet challenging jobs you can have. No one is born a natural dad; parenting skills are learned – mostly on the job. This article gives you a few pointers that will help you to be good dad, regardless of your situation.
Even if your child was unplanned, never let the child feel unwanted.
Spend as much time as you can with the child. You may no longer be in a relationship with the mother, but do all you can to make an agreement with her that means you can still be a big part of your child’s life. If you are separated, try to be respectful of each other as parents no matter what the circumstances of your break up. This will help your child to feel secure.
Your relationship with your child begins at birth. Try to be there. It is easy to assume that the mother is the most important parent during the first few weeks – but there is plenty you can do to start getting to know your child. Play with them, hug them, kiss them, talk to them. It is never too early to show affection.
Listen to your children as soon as they are old enough to express thoughts and ideas. Don’t make the mistake of simply telling them off. The more you listen to and respect them, the more they listen to and respect your wishes. Children need guidance and discipline, not as punishment, but to set boundaries. Explain why you don’t want them to do something and the consequences of their actions.. Catch them being good, as well catching them being ‘bad’. Reward for good behaviour
Remember that you are a role model. A girl who spends time with a loving dad grows up knowing she deserves to be treated with respect by boys. Dads can teach sons what is important in life by sharing their values, being loving and responsible.
Finally accept that you will make mistakes from time to time, all parents do. Don’t be afraid to say sorry.
