B-Day Landing

Whether you see yourself tearing down the motorway with broken waters all over your upholstery, or holding your partner's hand in a candlelit pool soundtracked by whalesong, there are several options for where you decide to have your child.

Your partner will want to take the lead on the issue of what sort of birth you have, which is fair enough, seeing as she's the one that's got actually do all the pushing and shoving when the time comes.

Hospital birth

Some births are quick, some take days – and if you’re at the hospital you can end up sleeping in an armchair or even sent home overnight if the ward is busy. However, hospital births offer the reassurance of knowing that your partner and child are in the right place for any eventuality, which counts for a lot. You have on hand all the expertise, technology and drugs to cover whatever may happen.

Home birth

If you have a home birth, you don’t have to go far from your partner to get some sleep in a proper bed. You can set up your own environment and you’re not sharing it with other parents and babies. You don’t have to eat hospital food. A major factor to be aware of though is that women having a home birth can’t have an epidural, the most effective means of pain relief.

Birthing pool

You can have a pool birth at home or in a hospital, although in hospitals you take the risk that all their pools may be in use when you give birth, whereas at home you can hire one and know you’ve got it. They can help make labour more comfortable and less painful. Apparently.

Whichever you choose, just make sure you're aware of all the options, and go for the one that suits you best.
