Daddy on the Moon starts with a little boy who is extremely upset because his Daddy isn’t home yet - he’s flying back after working somewhere far away and won’t be there until the morning. To balance the cliché of the Dad’s busy work life, the Mum in the story is a mechanic; when the boy breaks a toy, Mum says she’ll fix it, “I want Daddy to fix it!” is her son’s response. Which is all a bit heartbreaking.
Through a journey involving a digger, a helicopter and space ship, the boy finds his Daddy on the moon and they rocket their way back home together for a happy ending. The illustrations are detailed and imaginative but the colours seem to have low contrast, leaving it feeling a bit flat.
It’s a sensitive subject to base a children’s book on, although there’s some value for Kids whose Dad’s have to work late. Another notch on the guilt-o-meter for working Dad’s though.
