No matter what sort of person you are, having a baby interferes in the set-up of your home. If you’re a bit of a hoarder, or have a home that’s too small for all your stuff, making space for a baby can be a nightmare.
However, with the general changes in your life, this can be a good time to reassess what you need. Most of the stuff you get rid of you’ll probably never think about again. Also look at ways of storing stuff more efficiently. New technology can help – trade up old videotapes for DVDs and reclaim the space. It may also be worth investing in storage units or carry cases - by dispensing with the packaging that comes with DVD's and CD's you can save an incredible amount of space. You can always keep all the inlays in case you decide to recreate your prized collection later.
Make sure you start to go through that horrible piles of bills and undealt with correspondence too - you'll have less time and patience for this after the baby is here.
However, it’s worth bearing in mind that babies don’t take up much space at first – not just because they’re small, but because they don’t move around – so if you haven’t finished clearing out by the time they arrive, don’t worry. You can make more space for them to expand into as time goes on.
If you’re a minimalist sort of person who’s able to exist with a small amount of possessions, bully for you. Making space for a baby should be easy. Just be aware that children tend not to be all that minimalist. Or that clean.
