Going back to work

Unfortunately, in the UK most paternity leave is pathetically small – you are entitled to a mere two weeks. Small wonder that women are still overwhelmingly the primary carers for their children.

How you feel about going back to work will partly depend on how you feel about your job generally. If you dislike your job, you’ll probably resent having to go back all the more. If your job is important to you, at least a part of you will be keen to go back. Everyone’s situation is different – some workplaces and professions offer more flexibility than others – so find an arrangement for balancing work and childcare that works for you.

You shouldn’t feel guilty about devoting time to work. Not everything can be about your child, and even those who adore spending time with their kids will sometimes feel their brains turning to mush at the lack of adult interaction and stimulation. Getting the right balance can help you be better at both. Just remember that’s also true of your partner, so if she is the main carer, make sure she gets time for herself too – and that you get some time with your child, which you’ll probably want to do anyway.
