Looking after yourself

After a break up, you’ll probably be feeling like you’re running on empty, constantly needing to pull a bit more energy out of the already empty bag to accomplish the things that need to be done. But running yourself ragged will make yourself more susceptible to outbursts and emotional turmoil – so it’s essential that you look after yourself.

Mental Health

Getting your head straight is an important first step. Talk to friends, but be wary of mates whose views seem a little too extreme one way or the other. Make sure you don’t let feelings of self-pity, hopelessness or revenge consume you. For more information on this read our article on coping with your feelings.

Lifestyle

Above all, look after yourself physically. Make sure you:

  • Get enough sleep - around 7-8 hours a night.
  • Eat regularly and well - not too many pizzas, lots of fruit and veg.
  • Exercise – try and find something you enjoy, like jogging or cycling. If you can do it with a friend, even better.
  • Watch for signs of ill health – if you’re feeling stressed or anxious or depressed, go and see your GP.
  • Don’t overdo it with alcohol, drugs or smoking.

Conclusion

Bear in mind, it’s tempting to try and change everything in your life all at once, like joining a gym, quitting smoking, and buying a Porsche, but huge lifestyle changes can leave you exhausted and weak. Instead, make small changes that you can maintain.
