Joe Calzaghe's Dad pulls the plug on boxing showdown
Joe Calzaghe's upcoming $20m Madison Square Garden boxing match against Roy Jones Jr has been postponed - by his Dad Enzo. It's not a case of Enzo trying to mollycoddle his son though - undefeated Joe has proven he's more than capable of looking after himself. But Enzo is also his son't trainer, and after a training accident that left Joe with an injured hand, Dad is taking no chances:
"It is massive fight against Jones and, as his trainer, I am not about to take risks. I know the wrist is not right.Joe was annoyed with me for pulling him out but I asked him if he wanted to ruin an unblemished record spanning 25 years in one stupid move. Also, I didn’t want to be in a position after the fight where I was explaining the injury if things didn’t go right for us.That would have sounded too much like an excuse and I am not in the business of making excuses."
